1.Introduction to Human Highway and to this FAQ guide
Welcome to the human_highway mailing list! Please save this message for
future reference. Thank you.
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send
mail to majordomo@bosco.net with the following command in the body of your
email message:
unsubscribe human_highway
Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to, in case
you don't already have it:
Hello, and welcome!
This list will deal with anything relating to Neil Young; concerts (reviews
and dates), recordings (albums, cd's, promos, bootlegs, etc.), fandom,
personal quips, quotes, and stories, etc.
This list will not be moderated; however, if there is a large number of
insipid, annoying, or useless postings from a single indidividual, I'll
remove them if the members of the list sends me enough requests (as a rule
of thumb, I think if half of the people dislike someone enough to send me
mail, that would warrant removal.) You can't remove me, however, unless you
start your own list :-) Otherwise, I might send out periodic (and very rare)
administrative notices, commenting if the group has grown substantially, or
some other earth shattering news about the list has occured (I can't think
of any, but you never know...)
As a final note, no *extremely* large posts (GIF files and other very large
notes -- say, anything over 20K of data) should be sent to the list without
asking beforehand. If you have something like that you'd like to share, send
a note asking people who are interested to send mail to you directly.
To post to the mailing list, send mail to:
human_highway@bosco.net
Send administrative requests, including requests to be deleted from the list
or to change from the normal list to the digest or vice versa to:
majordomo@bosco.net
You can also do administrative tasks via the WWW: go to
http://www.bosco.net/cgi-bin/mdgate/HUMAN_HIGHWAY (regular
version)
or
http://www.bosco.net/cgi-bin/mdgate/HUMAN_HIGHWAY-DIGEST (digest
version)
You can subscribe & unsubscribe, request administrative files (like this
one), or browse the list archives.
To unsubscribe yourself, you would send a one-line e-mail note, saying:
unsubscribe human_highway
To subscribe to digest form, send a one-line note to majordomo, saying:
subscribe human_highway-digest
To unsubscribe, write:
unsubscribe human_highway-digest
[Note the underscores]
Anything else to say relating to the workings of the list (or whatever) send
to me, at:
arc@bosco.net
Enjoy!

NOTE: Please do NOT use the word "subscribe" correctly spelled in a post to
the list. The software doesn't like the word in normal posts, only in
messages sent to the administrative address. In case you send a message with
the word "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" correctly spelled to
human_highway@bosco.net, your post will be lost.

2. More information on Neil
A. HyperRust
HyperRust is THE information center of all things Neil on the Internet.
There, you will find links to many different Neil resources. Chances are, if
you have a question about Neil, the answer will be somewhere on HyperRust.
The HyperRust URL is http://Hyperrust.org .
B. Rust
Rust is another Neil Young mailing list; you can find subscription info for
it on HyperRust. It s somewhat bigger than Human Highway (60-100 messages a
day) and more restricted to pure Neil Young content.
C. Rusted-Guitars: the Neil Young guitar mailing list
(Following is from Dave Buell, manager of Rusted Guitars.)
Rusted Guitars is a mailing list maintained for the discussion of
Neil Young's guitar playing. Discussion topics include acoustic
and electric guitars, amp setups, tunings, strings, and of course,
licks, riffs, chords and tabulature covering the entire breadth of
Neil's work from the 60's to the 90's, including both released
recordings and unreleased performances.
To subscribe, send mail to majordomo@bosco.netwith the following in the body
of the message:
subscribe rusted-guitars
(Note the "dash" between rusted and guitars!)
After submitting the request, you'll get a confirmation note with further
instructions. The most important instruction is that, when you want to post
to the mailing list, you send your mail to this address:
rusted-guitars@bosco.net
For questions or help getting subscribed, you can send me (Dave Buell) mail
at dbuell@smartsoftonline.com. See you on Rusted Guitars!
D. Shakey
Well known Neilhead on Human Highway with an overwhelming archive on Neil
Young related dates.
E. Neil Young Newsgroups:
There is (at this writing) a Neil Young newsgroup with the address of
rec.music.artists.neil-young. Many news servers apparently are not
subscribed to it, because when we last looked at it, it consisted of people
exchanging funny pot stories (with not much Neil content, that is to say).
F. Neil Young IRC (Internet relay channel):
If you go to http://www.bosco.net/~hhighway/pages/chat.html, you'll find all
the needed info for #Rusties, the Neil Young chat room.

there are reviews of boots newly issued including setlist, lyrics to
unreleased songs, a section called Play'em like Neil; setlists from recent

I. Bad News Beat
This mailing list is intended to disseminate timely ticket information,
setlists, upcoming tour and concert date announcements, and miscellaneous
important stuff about Neil Young. Discussion, questions, and long rambling
reviews will not be found here. The goal is to allow busy people to stay in
touch.
Volume should not go beyond 2-3 messages per week on average.
In addition, Neil's private life is just that and any questions of that
nature will not be answered.
To subscribe, send mail to majordomo@bosco.net with this message in the
body:

3. Information on Neil's official releases
A. Where can I find a discography?
Check out the Neil Young album index. It has a list of Neil's albums, along
with detailed information about each album.
B. What's up with Archives?
Who knows? The latest rumors are __________________. Format is unknown some
possibilities being a box set, a series of a couple of CDs each, or a choice
of either format. Rumored length is 20 CDs, so save your pennies! Also
rumored to be included/available is a video archive set.
Possible complications include:
1. It's not ready
2. Neil records and releases something new
3. Neil releases the Missing Six (see below)
4. the moon is in the wrong phase
C. What are the Missing Six?
The missing six are the six out of print albums that Neil has recorded for
Reprise that have not yet been re-issued on CD. They are:
Journey Through The Past (1972)
Time Fades Away (1973)
On The Beach (1974)
American Stars 'N Bars (1977)
Hawks & Doves (1980)
Re-act-or (1981)
Neil has stated that once he finds a digital remastering platform that suits
his standards, he will reissue these albums and the rest of his catalog. At
this writing, the missing six have been scheduled for release several times
since 1993, always to be removed from the schedule.
Also, out of the five albums that Neil recorded during his stint on Geffen
Records (1982-1987), only Landing On Water is available from Geffen in the
U.S. (and it may be going out of print as we speak). Old Ways is available
as a gold CD (and audiophile vinyl) from Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs and
Trans, Everybody's Rockin', and Life are available as imports.
D. What about Neil's unreleased songs? Where can I get info on that?
HyperRust.
E. Neil on other artist's recordings?
HyperRust.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Latest Tour and Band Information
A. What was Neil's last tour?
In 1997, Neil headlined the H.O.R.D.E. Festival with Crazy Horse. Check
HyperRust for a list of reviews, pix, and more.
B. Info on upcoming events/tour:
Subscribe to the Bad_News_Beat mailing list, check out HyperRust, or just
lay back on the Highway and wait...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Who has Neil played with?
HyperRust has the most up-to-date list.
A. Who was Danny Whitten?
Danny Whitten was the original guitarist for Crazy Horse, and appeared on
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After The Gold Rush. His song "C'mon
Baby Let's Go Downtown" also appears on Tonight's The Night. Sadly, Danny
died November 18, 1972 of a heroin overdose. He was replaced by Frank
(Poncho) Sampedro.
B. Who were the Santa Monica Flyers?
The Santa Monica Flyers were the group that Neil recorded Tonight's The
Night with in 1973. Neil also toured with them in the late part of that
year. The members of the group were Nils Lofgren (guitar), Ben Keith (lap
pedal steel guitar), Billy Talbot (bass), and Ralph Molina (drums). Pictures
of them as a group appear in the Tonight's The Night album.
C. Who were the Restless/Lost Dogs?
The Restless were the group that Neil used to record the unreleased Times
Square album (partially released as the Eldorado EP) and Freedom. The
members included Chad Cromwell (drums) and Rick Rosas (bass) from Neil's
previous group The Bluenotes, Pancho Sampedro (guitar) from Crazy Horse, and
Ben Keith (pedal steel), a longtime Young associate. The Restless toured
America in early 1989; when they toured the Far East in the spring of that
year, they played as The Lost Dogs, even though The Lost Dogs were the same
musicians who comprised The Restless.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. What if I want to play Neil's music myself?
A. Recommended songbooks:
Neil Young Complete Music Volume I [1966-1969]
Neil Young Complete Music Volume II [1969-1973]
Neil Young Complete Music Volume III [1974-1979]
Warner Brothers Publications (no ISBN, etc.)
There are also individual books for single albums, the more popular ones are
readily available in music stores.
B. Where can I get tabs, chords, lyrics online?
Check out Fredrik Johansson's Neil Young Tab Page.
Aside from that there exist also a mailing list dedicated to Neil's guitar
playing and the musical stuff. The list is called Rusted-Guitars and
subscription info can be found both above and at HyperRust.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. I want more... beyond the official releases
A. Tape trees and tape trading
Tape trading is probably the most common means of accumulating boots and
live shows. Many of the folks on this mailing list are active traders so
posting that you're interested in trading then taking it to private email is
a good way to get started. Another common means of acquiring live tapes is
the tape tree.
Trees work like this:
seed ---> branch ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
---> branch ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
| ----> leaf
. .
. .
. .
Someone provides a seed tape and dubs it for branches who in turn dub copies
for leaves. All this is done for trades or blanks.
The branches either arrange a trade with the seed or supply blanks AND
return postage. In turn, the leaves either arrange a trade with their branch
or supply blanks AND return postage.
To join a tree, watch for the announcement of the tree then email the
requested info to the seed (taping equipment, address, noise reduction
preference, etc). After a set amount of time the tree is closed, the tree
structure is posted to the list, and the fun begins.
Trees are a great way to quickly distribute good tapes and are the easiest
and cheapest way to start a collection.
B. Bootleg Recordings
Purchasing bootleg recordings is the other means of collecting live
performances. Bootleg recordings tend to be expensive (~$20/CD) and the
quality varies widely. It is highly recommended that you know something
about a recording before purchasing. A good site for Neil boots is
Interstate, which is run by Bas van der Meer.
The URL for Interstate is http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/5998
Other sources of information include Broken Arrow and asking others on this
mailing list.
And a warning (for those in the US).... Bootleg recordings are illegal.
Though it is rare that non-dealers are caught and/or prosecuted, shipments
from overseas companies may be intercepted by US customs.
C. Recommended live shows
Look for Tim Parrish's Boots for Beginners, available at
http://members.tripod.com/~Dreaming_Man/boots/bfb2.htm
D. Yeah, but what about setlists?
Look at Tom Hambleton's Sugar Mountain site; it has almost all of Neil's
shows since 1970. The URL is http://www.cruzio.com/~tah/sugarmtn.html
E. What are the ABD tapes, and how can I get a copy?
The ABD tapes are made up of officially unreleased Neil songs that have been
compiled by Neil fans on three tapes. Grovel on the list for them and you'll
find someone who'll make you a copy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Important miscellaneous information
A. What is the Bridge School, the Bridge, etc..?
Neil and his wife, Pegi, founded the Bridge School to teach methods of
communication to severely physically handicapped children. The goal of the
school is to enhance communication with and for the kids with a year or two
of training at the Bridge School and then return them to the regular school
system.
The annual (except for 1987) Bridge School Benefit concert has been a
highlight of the Bay Area's fall music schedule. Notable performers have
included (in no particular order): Bruce Springsteen, CSNY, Bob Dylan, Jerry
Garcia & Bob Weir, Pete Townshend, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Nils Lofgren,
David Bowie, Beck, The Pretenders, Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Pearl Jam,
Elton John, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Cowboy Junkies, Elvis Costello,
Sonic Youth, ... and more.
Recently, as a fundraiser for the Bridge School, a CD comprised of prior
Bridge School performances was released on Reprise Records. The CD manages
to pack quite a diverse and well-known list of artists, so look for it in
your local record store.
Another fundraiser for the Bridge School that you'll see mentioned is a CD
called 'The Bridge'. This is a collection of Neil's songs performed by
"alternative" (I hate that word but...) bands including Sonic Youth,
Dinosaur Jr., ...
The Bridge School has a web site at http://www.bridgeschool.org
B. How tall is Neil?
Neil Young appears to have an unprecedented ability to alter his height.
Innocently introduced by an unwitting Rusty, this topic has produced a
stunning variety of anecdotes revealing a previously unknown phenomenon. A
summary of Neil's observed heights:
1. 4"-6" (12 cm) measured between thumb and forefinger at a concert.
Further evidence of this height is that he fits on a CD cover and has
been photographed numerous times dwarfed by microphones.
2. 12' (3.65 m) measured from seats in the front row of a concert
3. 6' (1.82 m) Bob (who's self-proclaimed purpose is travelling with Neil)
said so.
4. really tall - Neil straddles a road and semi-truck with a helicopter in
his hands in the video for "Cry, Cry, Cry".
C. Neil vs. God

From: "Jason A. Schwartz"
To: rust@death.fish.com
Subject: Neil vs. God
Stupid Girl has asked me to furnish further details of this Clash of Titans.
Since occasional "Neil is God" remarks seem to surface from time to time, I
decided to invite both Neil and God to my dorm room to do battle. Available
to USA rusties via Pay Per View, the match was shown three days ago on HBO.
Despite their busy schedules, each accepted my invitation and faced off in
several mini-competitions, the results of which determined an overall
winner. Here's how they stacked up against each other:

As you can see, the mini-competitions left the two worthy combatants more or
less tied (my OTB typo notwithstanding). Please help break the tie by
submitting a tie-breaker category along with your choice for the winner.

Shakey, I hope you're not wearing your good pants!! Here's Part II:
Well, okay rusties! Here are the results of the long-awaited rematch: Neil
vs. the Eternal One (or Many or None, as the case may be)! Although rusties
from the soccer countries are accustomed to seeing important ties broken by
penalty kicks, Neil had no interest in that approach.

see Neil's tour bus!! So we might as well add:
Cooler Tour Bus: Neil Young, overall winner of the Neil v. God Match!!
Thanks to all contributors! Sorry I had to abbreviate some of your
suggestions for my chart. I hope I didn't butcher them too badly.

G. What does [name of song] mean?
These type of threads are the ones we get most frequently here on Human
Highway. For what it's worth, the song most frequently mentioned is
Powderfinger. Neil's not much for explaining his songs...
The only thing we can say is that the interpertation that means the most is
your own. Feel free to discuss what a song means to you on the list; we're
always open to new ideas. Some previous lyrical analyzations are on
HyperRust.
H. What is a "J-card", and where can I get a program to make one?
A j-card is a nickname for the liner in a cassette tape case that the songs
are written on. (Hold it on edge - it looks like a J). There are several
that are used by Rusties, here are some with their URL's:
Caselinr :

Tapetracker : http://tapetracker.com/

I. Neil specific acronyms
On Neil Young lists, a lot of acronyms are used related to Neil Young
songs/albums titles and other list issues. A frequently updated list with
the translations can be found at:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
9.To finish, some Netiquette...
Please don't regard these notes as boring or censoring anyone. Those
guidelines are helpful in dealing with any Internet mailing list, forum,
newsgroup, etc...
* Be creative with your subject line.
* Although the global Internet language is English (with all its
derivatives), please don't forget that it's not the general mother
language on this planet. Please don't flame someone for their grammar
or spelling.
* Please do NOT write IN ALL CAPS. This is regarded as "SHOUTING" and may
sound offensive. Some people get very upset about that. Only shout if
you REALLY want to get a point across.
* Please do NOT post entire trading lists. Just write that you are
interested in trading and people should ask in private emails for your
trading list. Use the "Your list gets mine" policy. But don't forget:
Trading is cool on this list.
* When quoting, please cite the original author correctly. This avoids
misunderstandings. And please only send as much of the article you are
quoting as neccessary (feel free to cut other parts of the message or
signatures).
* Please do NOT post chain letters and frequently upcoming messages on
the Internet. E.g., the "GOOD TIMES"Internet virus bogus story.
BTW: This virus IS a hoax. Info can be found at:
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~bern/GoodTimes-Hoax/FAQ.html
* Use smileys to express your intentions when it's not clear from typing.
Using smileys you can express
happiness, smiling :-)
sadness :-(
winking, sarcasm, irony ;-)
user just made a wry statement :-7
user made a sour statement :-*
smiling with a triple chin :-)))
etc., to make it clear to the reader, what you really feel behind your
words. If you are feeling creative, the "Unofficial Smiley Dictionary"
can be found at
http://www.eff.org/papers/eegtti/eeg_286.html
ANYWAY:
We hope that you'll enjoy the list, feel happy and comfortable, and are
encouraged to engage yourself in the various widespread issues that are
discussed here.
May The Horse be with you!
