I have been listening to the Dylan/Dead tapes alot lately and feel that it is a match made in heaven. Neil does what he does very well but he would not be good backing someone like Dylan. To me I see the Dead and Jerry as a finesse type of group that augments Dylan well, whereas Neil shines as a folk type performer just alone with his acoustic (or organ) or pounding his guitar with CH.
